Find Old Files You No Longer Use in Google Drive

After a few years, most of a Drive is files nobody opens again. Wistorix filters files by how long they've gone unused, so you can decide what to keep, archive or delete.

The Wistorix finder for Google Drive old files sorts your files by how long they've gone unopened: 90 days, 180 days and 1 year. Each group shows a file count and its size, so you know how much space sits in files nobody uses and can start with the biggest group.

Three cutoffs: 90 days, 180 days, 1 year

‍

The rarely used files group splits files by how long they've gone unopened: 90 days, 180 days and 1 year. Each cutoff shows a file count and total size, so you see right away how much space is tied up in files nobody uses.

‍

Filter Google Drive old files by type and size

‍

Combine a cutoff with the file type and size filters to narrow the list. Videos over 100MB that nobody has opened in a year are usually the first group worth reviewing.

‍

See which old files are still shared

‍

Old files keep the sharing settings they had while the project was running. Wistorix shows the sharing status next to each file, so you can close an old public link before deciding whether to keep the file.

‍

Act in bulk once you've decided

‍

Select the files you don't need and move them to the Trash, or open them in Drive to move them into an archive folder. Deleted files stay in the Google Drive Trash for 30 days before they are removed for good.

‍

How to find old files in Google Drive

‍

  1. Scan your Drive. Install the Wistorix Chrome extension, sign in and run a scan. Scanning is free and unlimited.
  2. Choose a cutoff. Open rarely used files, choose 90 days, 180 days or 1 year, then sort by size.
  3. Keep, archive or delete. Move files that still matter into an archive folder. Move the ones you don't need to the Trash.

‍

Can Google Drive filter old files on its own?

‍

Drive has a date modified filter in advanced search, but no filter by last opened date across your whole Drive, and it doesn't add up storage by group. The Wistorix old file finder does both in one scan. When to archive instead of delete is covered in our guide to finding old files in Google Drive.

‍

How Wistorix keeps your data safe

‍

  • Wistorix reads file metadata only: name, size, owner, sharing settings and dates
  • It never deletes a file on its own. Every action runs only after you confirm
  • Deleted files stay in the Google Drive Trash for 30 days

Frequently asked questions

‍

How long does a file have to go unopened to count as old?

‍

That's up to you. Wistorix has three cutoffs: 90 days, 180 days and 1 year. Contracts and invoices may go a whole year unopened and still need to be kept.

‍

Should I delete every file I haven't opened in a year?

‍

No. Keep legal and accounting documents and the source files of work you've delivered. Sort by size and deal with the large files first.

‍

Do files other people shared with me count?

‍

Wistorix separates the files you own from files shared with you. Only the files you own count against your storage.

‍

Is the old file finder free?

‍

Yes. Scanning and viewing the list of old files is always free.
