Bulk Transfer Ownership in Google Drive

Hand over a Drive when an employee leaves or a project closes: move many files to the new owner at once, keep the folder structure as it is and get a log to check against.

The Wistorix tool to bulk transfer ownership in Google Drive moves many files and folders to a new owner in one go, keeps the folder structure intact and saves a log you can check the handover against.

Transfer many files in one go

‍

Google Drive only lets you transfer ownership one file at a time, or one selection inside a single folder. Wistorix lets you pick files by folder, by type or from your scan results, then transfer ownership of all of them to one person.

‍

Keep the folder structure as it is

‍

After the transfer, every file stays in the same folder as before. The new owner doesn't have to reorganize anything, and links you already sent to clients still point to the right file.

‍

A log of every transfer

‍

Each transfer is recorded: which file, from whom, to whom and when. Use it as a record to check against when work is handed over between teams or to a client.

‍

Request ownership from someone else

‍

For files another person owns, send an ownership request so they can accept moving the file to you. Useful when you need to gather project files into one account before someone leaves.

‍

How to bulk transfer ownership in Google Drive

‍

  1. Scan your Drive. Install the Wistorix Chrome extension, sign in with the account that owns the files and run a scan. Scanning is free.
  2. Pick the files and the new owner. Select the files or folders to hand over and enter the new owner's email.
  3. Transfer ownership. Confirm to transfer. The new owner gets an email from Google, and the log keeps a record you can check later.

‍

Google's rules for transferring ownership

‍

  • On Google Workspace, you can only transfer ownership to someone in the same organization
  • On a personal Gmail account, the recipient has to accept the invitation before they become the owner
  • Only the current owner can transfer ownership

‍

Wistorix follows these rules. The full handover process for when someone leaves is in our guide to transferring ownership in Google Drive.

‍

How Wistorix keeps your data safe

‍

  • Wistorix reads file metadata only, never file contents
  • It never transfers a file on its own. Every action runs only after you confirm
  • An ownership transfer has no automatic undo. To get a file back, the new owner transfers it back to you

Frequently asked questions

‍

Can I transfer ownership to someone in another organization?

‍

Not from a Google Workspace account, because Google only allows transfers within the same organization. Give the person edit access or send them a copy instead.

‍

Will links I sent to clients still work after the transfer?

‍

Yes. The file keeps its location and sharing settings. Only the owner changes.

‍

Does the previous owner keep access to the file?

‍

Usually, yes. The previous owner stays on the file as an editor. If they have left, revoke that email's access once the transfer is done.

‍

Is bulk ownership transfer free?

‍

Scanning and viewing the file list is always free. A paid plan applies when you act on a large number of files.
