Duplicate File Remover for Google Drive

Group every duplicate together, including copies that were renamed or moved to another folder. See how much space they waste, keep one copy and send the rest to the Trash in one go.

The Wistorix Google Drive duplicate file remover scans all of My Drive, groups identical copies together and shows how much space each group wastes. Compare the copies, keep the one you use and move the extras to the Trash in one go.

See every duplicate in your Drive

‍

Google Drive has no feature for finding duplicates. Wistorix scans all of My Drive once and returns a list of duplicate groups, each with the total space it takes up. You can see right away which group to handle first.

‍

Catch renamed copies too

‍

Wistorix compares the checksum (a fingerprint of the content) and the size that Google Drive stores for every uploaded file. Two identical files land in the same group even if they have different names, sit in different folders or were uploaded at different times.

‍

Compare each copy before you remove duplicates

‍

The compare duplicates view lines the copies up side by side with their path, owner, last modified date and sharing status. Keep the copy that's shared with a client or sits in the right project folder, then select the extras.

‍

Remove duplicates in bulk, and restore if needed

‍

Select the extra copies across several groups and move them to the Trash. They go to the Google Drive Trash, where Google keeps them for 30 days, so you can restore a file if you picked the wrong one.

‍

How to find and remove duplicate files in Google Drive

‍

  1. Scan your Drive. Install the Wistorix Chrome extension, sign in with your Google account and run a scan. Scanning is free, as often as you like.
  2. Open the duplicate files group. Check the number of duplicate groups and the space they waste. Open each group and use the compare view to choose the copy to keep.
  3. Move the extras to the Trash. Select the extra copies and move them to the Trash. Your storage goes down once the Trash is emptied.

‍

How the duplicate file remover compares files

‍

For uploaded files (photos, videos, PDFs, archives, design files), Google Drive already stores a checksum. Wistorix reads it through the Google Drive API, along with the name, size and modified time. It never has to open or download a file to compare it.

‍

Google Docs, Sheets and Slides have no checksum. These are compared by name and modified time, so open them and check before you delete. The manual way to do this is covered in our guide to finding duplicate files in Google Drive.

‍

How Wistorix keeps your data safe

‍

  • Wistorix reads file metadata only: name, size, owner, sharing settings and modified time
  • It never downloads file contents or stores them on Wistorix servers
  • It never deletes a file on its own. Every action runs only after you confirm
  • Deleted files stay in the Google Drive Trash for 30 days before they are removed for good

Frequently asked questions

‍

Does it find duplicates with different names?

‍

Yes. Wistorix compares the checksum and size, so two identical files end up in the same group even when their names differ.

‍

Does it scan photos in Google Photos?

‍

No. Wistorix scans files stored in Google Drive. Photos in Google Photos are managed separately in the Photos app.

‍

Will removing a duplicate break a link I sent to a client?

‍

It can, if you delete the exact copy the client is using. Keep the copy that's shared. Wistorix shows the sharing status next to each copy so you can pick the right one.

‍

Is the duplicate file remover free?

‍

Scanning and viewing duplicate groups is always free. A paid plan is only needed when you act on a large number of files.
