Find Duplicate Photos in Google Drive

Photos and videos are the files that get uploaded most often: shots sent to clients, phone backups, edited videos exported again. Wistorix groups identical copies so you keep one and drop the rest.

The Wistorix tool for Google Drive duplicate photos groups every identical photo and video after one scan, including copies that were renamed or sit in another folder. See how much space each group wastes, keep one copy and move the rest to the Trash.

Duplicate photos and videos take up the most space

‍

A duplicate document costs a few hundred KB, but a duplicate video can cost several GB. Wistorix shows how much space each group of Google Drive duplicate photos and videos takes up, so you can handle the heaviest ones first.

‍

Catch renamed photos too

‍

Phone photos usually have names like IMG_2041.jpg, while the copy sent to a client gets renamed after the project. Wistorix compares the checksum and size that Google Drive stores for every uploaded file, so two identical photos land in the same group even with different names and folders.

‍

Compare before you drop the extras

‍

The compare duplicates view lines the copies up side by side with their path, owner, last modified date and sharing status. Keep the copy in the right project folder or the one shared with a client, then select the rest.

‍

Delete duplicate photos in bulk, and still restore them

‍

Select the extra copies across several groups and move them to the Trash. They go to the Google Drive Trash, where Google keeps them for 30 days, so you can restore a photo if you picked the wrong one.

‍

How to find duplicate photos in Google Drive

‍

  1. Scan your Drive. Install the Wistorix Chrome extension, sign in with your Google account and run a scan. Scanning is free, as often as you like.
  2. Open the duplicate files group. Sort the groups by size to see the heaviest videos and photos. Open each group in the compare view.
  3. Keep one copy, drop the rest. Select the extra copies and move them to the Trash. Your storage goes down once the Trash is emptied.

‍

Does it scan photos in Google Photos?

‍

No. Wistorix scans files stored in Google Drive. Photos backed up with the Google Photos app are managed separately in Photos, even though they share the same storage quota as Drive. If you upload photos from your phone into a Drive folder (not through Photos), those photos are included in the scan.

‍

Why photos get duplicated in Drive

‍

  • The same photo folder gets uploaded twice after a dropped connection
  • The desktop sync app creates copies when there's a conflict
  • Photos are sent to clients as copies instead of sharing the original
  • Photos from several people get gathered into one shared folder

‍

For duplicates of every file type, use the duplicate file remover.

Frequently asked questions

‍

Does Wistorix catch photos that look almost the same?

‍

No. Wistorix groups files with identical content (the same checksum and size). Two burst shots that differ slightly are still two separate files.

‍

Can it find duplicate videos?

‍

Yes. Videos uploaded to Drive also have a checksum, so they're grouped the same way as photos. Videos are usually the duplicate groups that take up the most space.

‍

Will deleting a duplicate photo break a link I sent to a client?

‍

It can, if you delete the exact copy the client is using. Wistorix shows the sharing status next to each copy so you keep the right one.

‍

Is finding duplicate photos free?

‍

Yes. Scanning and viewing duplicate groups is always free.
